NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi focuses on social media, he has granted access to his Social Networking administration in a drive to put social media for the need of people. Modi engaged group of supporters over Twitter and Facebook after successful election campaign. He has put Facebook at the centre of his government's media strategies.
To the ministers and their staff Twitter has been given direct access, advising them to use social media, as well as organizing workshops to train ambassadors, said Raheel Khursheed, head of news, politics and government at Twitter India.
Facebook's Chief Operating Officer (COO) Sheryl Sandberg is currently in India, promoting the potential of Facebook for small businesses and economic expansion. With 5 million followers, Modi is the fourth most followed leader on Twitter worldwide, And has 18.8 million fan likes on Facebook
Sandberg has requested a meeting with Modi, a source said. the source also added she will meet India's minister for information and technology, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Details were not available about Sandberg's discussion with government officials.
After the United States and China, India has the world's third-largest internet user base, 13.7% of the population only have access to the internet in 2013, according to consulting firm eMarketer. By 2018 more than a 1/4th of population is said to be on the Web.
Facebook has more than 100 million active users in India and Twitter has 40 million users. Those numbers are seen growing rapidly as Internet penetration and smartphone ownership is increasing.
